  • Opening Doors with Chromebooks!

    Funded Feb 6, 2020

It is with complete excitement that I share my thanks for your generous donations in ensuring our classroom has another Chromebook Computer. It has been a few weeks now since our Chromebook has arrived, and I can tell you that every day, students rush to get their work done to see if they can be the first to get their hands on the new Chromebook. One new computer may seem like a small thing, but it brings our technology count up to 8 devices! Every time we have a moment to practice our math facts, listen to books read aloud, or practice our reading skills, that's one more student that has the opportunity that didn't before. When we play the class favorite, Kahoot!, that's one more device to add to the mix, so now instead of so many groups of 3 students, we have more groups that are just partners - they get more chances to play and contribute! We are just beginning Accelerated Reader, too, and now we have one extra computer that our students can use to take their quizzes (and they are so excited!). So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for bringing more joy to our classroom and for providing my students with the opportunity for a better education.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dellaquila

  • Exploring Our World With Chromebooks!

    Funded Apr 11, 2019

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how very thankful I am for your donations to our project. About a week ago, we received our three Chromebooks, and I wish you could have been there to see the excitement on the kids' faces. It was priceless! With the help of our tech department, each student was given a Google account to use on the Chromebooks. They are so proud that they can independently log on to the computers with their accounts!

Each day they look forward to getting a chance to use them. Even my students who struggle are putting in the effort so that they can have time on the Chromebooks. We are able to get more students into our awesome computer programs to practice their reading and math skills. Our technology center can now hold 8 students!! Their eyes light up when they realize they get to use them and realize that they are capable of using them with ease! They've taken great care in choosing a picture for their account and I can just imagine their excitement when I show them how to access their email accounts!

I'm already dreaming about opportunities for next school year, too! The ability to research topics in class. The ability to use Google Classroom during our center time. The ability to motivate kids to complete their computer programs and increase their learning and engagement! The opportunities are nearly endless and that is all because of you and your generous donations. I truly just can't thank you enough.”

    With gratitude,

  • Buzzing with Technology: Using Bee Bots to Practice Coding

    Funded Nov 3, 2017

I would just like to take a moment to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart. On the day that we received our Bee Bots in the classroom, the students and I felt like it was Christmas day! The boxes arrived and we all couldn't wait to open them. We gathered around in a circle and began opening boxes one by one. The cheers could be heard down the hallway as each new package was opened. Of course, they immediately wanted to try them out so we set things up and started learning together.

We received four mats and three Bee Bots and have been using them all almost every day. The Bee Bots have become an incentive to finish work on time because students are allowed to explore with them after Morning Work is completed. We also use them as skill practice. The Bee Bots have been used for coding to short vowel words, words with blends, and now we're getting more complicated and using the pause button to help us spell out full words. It's amazing to see them catch on to the coding terminology, and it's also amazing to see them working at reading skills without even realizing it.

We couldn't have experienced this awesomeness without all of your donations and for that we are so very grateful. Next week we even get to show off our Bee Bots at our school board meeting. So, again, thank you so very much for helping me find meaningful and effective ways to engage my students in learning!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Dellaquila

Have you ever heard of first graders coding robots to carry out a specific set of instructions to complete a designed task? I hadn't either until I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a Code.org training at the start of this school year. There, I was immersed in this wonderful world of teaching students to code. I was astounded by the opportunities students will have if we give them the tools necessary to be 21st century learners. Part of this includes starting young and helping students embrace their critical thinking abilities. Something as simple as a Bee Bot can help! A Bee Bot is a robot that students can program to carry out a specific set of instructions (a code). This Bee Bot starter kit and additional Bee Bots will allow us to practice our critical thinking and coding skills in an age appropriate manner while also practicing our math skills, reading skills, spelling skills etc. For example, by setting up our learning mat with letters, students can code the Bee Bot to stop on letters that spell our spelling words. I will be able to give them a definition, and they will have to code the Bee Bot to stop on the word that matches that definition. Practicing math facts? Throw out a math problem and have the Bee Bot stop on the number that correctly answers the problem. The opportunities are endless!
