  • Star Reading

    Funded Aug 10, 2017

Thank you for your generous donation to my classroom. The students are enjoying each and every book! Because these books are a part of a reading challenge, it has made all the difference to have extra copies of the books, in class. The students share the books and are able to get their challenge completed more quickly.

The lessons taught, by the students reading these books, range from summarizing, character analysis and synthesis of text. The books give us a common option that we all have read, in order to be able to do these types of lessons. Because some of the books have similar topics and themes, we are able to do a rather large study of theme. The students have to work hard to find a common theme between all of the books! They hate it and love it at the same time!

In my classroom, reading is a huge priority. These books give us some more options and flexibility. I am so thankful for your generous donations.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dennis

  • Dennis Library Home

    Funded Oct 12, 2014

On last year, we received an amazing rug for my students to have a "change of venue" to read. Not only was this a beautiful addition to my classroom, but it was functional and effective. The students raced to the rug in order to be able to sit somewhere different.

At my school, literacy is an issue. The students don't have a ton of books at home and most read below grade level. It is a difficult task to get the students to read for a sustained amount of time, on their own. Change of venue is one of the tactics that can be used in order to refocus students and get them to maybe read a little longer.

The fact that I was able to provide my students with another reading space made things so much easier. It was like a treat! We had to place a point /reward system in place so we could get to see who sat there! The students love and enjoy the "Reading Rug!"

Thank you, again, for your generosity and for knowing the value of the little things in education.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Dennis

This classroom project was brought to life by Smarties and one other donor.
My students think they are the lowest, most forgotten, unloved and unacceptable students in the district. However, my students are promising young bundles of potential and just need the motivation and encouragement to see a brighter future. My students have been through some hard experiences in life and some have already given up. I want them to know that giving up is not an option. We have to continue to try to strive for a better, brighter, more productive future. Our school is a lower socio-economic school, with an enrollment of about 700. We work to expand our students' horizons. Great strides have been made to improve every area of their lives.
