iPads for iDebate!
Funded May 12, 2013Thanks you so much for empowering our students with the best technology. We have found the iPad mini to be one of the best tools because it is (a) small (b) affordable; (c) quality. Size is important because we are mobile in our outreach to other schools and so we can store them in a backpack - an entire class set. They are also affordable - an ipad or other $500 tablet - we may as well get a laptop. But a $399 beats most of the netbooks on the market and brings all the power of a tablet - camera, camcorder, apps and more. And no laptop can match that. Finally, quality - it does the same thing as a regular iPad. So thank you so much! - Erik”

Bringing Technology to the South Bronx!
Funded May 10, 2013Thank you so much for your wonderful donation to provide our students with access to the best technology opportunities. Our debaters with ipads will be able to use them to research, to write, to record, to photograph, to edit and proofread speeches, to highlight readings, to access any book virtually and free, as well as convert for their other classes. This is crucial because our students often lack the same technology resources as their suburban and private school counterparts in debate competitions and so you have helped us close this achievement gap. Thank you so much for providing our students with access to the best technology!!”

Technology for Our Great Debaters!
Funded May 10, 2013Thanks so much for supporting technology for our students. One of the most incredible benefits of an iPad is the access to apps. Our students can access an entire education world through the apps. And the most incredible thing - is you can download even more of them at any time! There are apps for everything our students need - and nearly all are free and low cost. This includes calculators, scientific calculators, timers, books, magazines, periodicals, learning games, notepads, typing programs, online classes and so much more. Our debaters have access to everything. Thank you so much for making this possible!!! - Erik”

Great Debaters and Great Technology!
Funded May 10, 2013Thank you so much for your continued investment to make our Great Debaters so great! Because of you 1-1 technology during the summer will be able to happen. This is critical because our students need to learn research skills. In previous years we have had no computer access and so students were not able to learn valuable research skills. This is tragic because at a typical debate institute students are researching all day on computers. The problem here is that the majority of students do not have access to computers. Indeed, at a typical debate institute costs are about $4000 per student. We are changing this. Thank you for helping make this possible.”

Bringing Technology To The South Bronx!
Funded May 10, 2013So as you know the ipad is one of the most powerful tools created for education and has revolutionized the technology market with the introduction of the tablet computer. With a tablet computer - students can do everything!! Our debaters can photograph and video debate tournaments. Our debaters can record and replay their speeches for practice. Our debaters can research any book or periodical to prepare their cases. Our debaters can write their speeches and deliver with the tablets. So many doors and opportunities open up to our debaters because of you. Thank you so much for everything!! - Erik”

Our Great Debaters Need Laptops!
Funded May 7, 2013Thank you so much David for again digitally empowering our students. You see the results everyday with Geo. Geo was struggling without a computer for his debates, when you made that magical investment - it definitely helped him at all tournaments. Harvard - Semifinals! Lakeland - 1st place! National Debate Coaches Tournament - Quarterfinals! Tournament of Champions - octofinalists!! Their results are amazing and so much of that is due to you to ensure that they have access to the best technology. And thanks to you we can do this one student at a time for every debater in NYC!”

"I Have a Dream" Martin Luther King Jr. Debate Invitational!
Funded Mar 23, 2013Thank you so much for providing us with trophies for our debate tournament. 2 years ago when the prior debate league collapsed during the recession - we have been rebuilding it ever since. We could not do this without you or Donors Choose. I remember the first tournament we had on our own and I had to pay out of pocket to make sure our students had trophies. And we have been growing ever since! And a huge part of that growth and the foundation of that growth has been you and Donors Choose by providing the most necessary item of an entire debate league - the trophies. This is what the debaters compete for, research for and prepare for. This is what our debaters see at the tournament. This is what our debaters take home to show off to the family and friends. This is what recruits new students to the debate team.
Thanks!

Awards Needed For Our February Debate Tournament!
Funded Feb 5, 2013Thank you so much for supporting a free debate league for all students!!
Why debate? Scholastic debate since Ancient Greece has been the most rigorous academic program. Debate improves academic performance (debaters earn higher grades than their peers, have higher attendance rates, and are more likely to test as college ready in English, Reading, Math and Science). Debate improves graduation rates (90% of urban debaters graduate on time). Debate prepares students for college (89% of urban debaters attend college). Debate prepares students for 21st century careers (debate teaches critical thinking and problem solving, research, communication, collaboration and creativity). Debate inspires political and civic engagement. Debaters are more likely to vote, volunteer for a campaign, or run for office. This list includes over a dozen Presidents, the majority of Supreme Court Justices (including the first hispanic Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor and the first African American Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall), governors, mayors, civil rights, social and community activists. It was no surprise to read that recently passed NYC Mayor Ed Koch was a member of his high school's debate team along with current Mayor Bloomberg who was President of his high school's debate team and described in his yearbook as "argumentative."
Thank you again so much for everything you have done for so many years! We would not have a free debate league without you!”
