  • Wave the Magic UV Wand

    Funded Oct 23, 2020

The UV wands have been heaven sent for my students and the library. During the pandemic, there are a lot of unknown factors as to how the coronavirus can spread.

Because we were unsure, we were not having students check books out of the library and simply reading e-books. The thing about that is that a lot of the kid's favorites were not available through e-books and were just sitting on the shelf. I had recently purchased new titles that could not be used because we just wanted to make sure we were safe when handling books. Then we decided to allow students to check out books and just have the books be in quarantine for two weeks and then re-issued.

Well then it came down to students wanting books that were in quarantine and had to wait two weeks before they could have it. This also became a task for me and my aide who had to box and store books to be quarantine and then rotate them out. It was a nightmare! Once I found out about the wand, I knew having this would be what we needed to get things going for us with getting books out faster.

After receiving the wands, the books were being re-shelved within two days and students were ecstatic to see fresh new titles or frequent flyer titles. When they saw the wand, they were amazed that something as simple as a UV light could kill germs. Now we will begin a research project in the spring about how can the UV light kill germs!

Thank you for your donations and the students at Bush Elementary are forever grateful for your generosity.”

  • Graphic Novels, Increases the Love of Reading!

    Funded Dec 31, 2018

First let me start off by saying, THANK YOU for helping to fund our project for the Graphic Novels! Let me first off say that they did not last long on the shelf before the students came and grabbed them!! They were super excited and could not wait to begin reading, which is the whole point of the Graphic Novels! It sparks a love of reading in all students, no matter their reading level. They either can look at the pictures and create a story or read it for themselves.

Reading happens daily and begins when the school opens it's doors. Students read in the hallway while they are waiting to go into their rooms. We have school-wide reading time for 15 minutes and also when they come to the library, they have the opportunity to silent read before our lesson begins.

The students who are enjoying the books are the boys! Which is awesome because it is hard to get boys to read at times. They come to the library and immediately go straight to the graphic novel area to grab one. They were also excited about the new graphic novels that we did not have like, Spiderman, Plants vs. Zombie, and Babymouse. There are not enough thank yous to show how grateful we are of your donations.”

  • LEER mas noficcion!; Read more Nonfiction!

    Funded Oct 31, 2018

First off I would like to thank you again for helping to fund my project. My bilingual students were extremely excited to see the new and colorful books available to them. They now have a variety of books about careers and holidays that they can read to learn about. The text features in the book help them to review and practice their language arts analyzing skills.

In my class the students are allowed to check the books out and also take them home if they chose. I read the books to the students and then we do an activity related tot he books to help understand the information more. During Christmas, I was able to put the new Christmas books out that did not last long on display. Students were drawn to its cover and excited by the information inside. My first graders are really excited by the books, because they discuss holidays and text features a lot in their classrooms. Their teachers were also excited because they had fresh titles to use in their rooms as well.

Overall, we are grateful and thrilled to know there are individuals out there willing to help out low income schools like ours. The students now can be exposed to new information and they also know that there are good people out in the world that are there to help them.”

  • Wobble, Wobble Chairs

    Funded Oct 1, 2017

The wobble chairs have been a HIT in my library and the students love coming in and sitting on them while they read. My students who have to constantly move enjoy them the most because it helps to keep them focused while I'm reading a story or as they are working on iPads.

For the last two weeks we have been coding in the library and the students use the iPads to complete their projects. The students raced to grab a wobble chair to use as they worked on their assignments. They really do help in relieving the jitters in the students who cannot sit still for long periods of time.

I plan on purchasing more for my library so that I have enough for a class set of students.”

  • Read, Relax, and Wobble

    Funded Sep 23, 2017

When our wobble chairs and reading center arrived and were placed in the library, the staff AND students were wowed!! The kids could not wait to sit on the chairs and use the reading center. The students who have a hard time sitting for long periods of time, ask to sit on the wobble chairs because it helps to keep them focused.

I would love to keep adding more relaxing furniture into my library so that our students can feel relaxed when they come into the library. We are eternally grateful for everyone who donated to our project!!!”

  • Help Us Read to Succeed in 2015!

    Funded Mar 22, 2015

First off I would like to thank you all for donating to our school's project "Read to Succeed!" We were eternally grateful to hear that our project was funded and that we would receive new books! The Clifford books that we had before were in terrible condition and now the students are excited to have brand new books to read and enjoy! Our ESL first and second graders are especially excited because they frequent the library to check these out. I have the books on a book cart and we can't keep them in the bins long enough, because they are in high demand! These books help them in identifying words that they know in English and Spanish, plus they are fun to read for laughter.

Our Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Captain Underpants books are also flying off the shelf to the point we have a waiting list for students to check them out. When our third and fourth graders saw the new books their faces lit up with excitement! We now have tripled our collection and more students are coming in the library to read.

The Dinosaur books have been a special treat as well for our younger boys who love to view the pictures and learn new information about the animals. The ask me if we are going to get more and I have to tell them that I would have to write another grant:).

Overall they are happy for the books and I am enjoying seeing their faces and the steady flow of traffic of students coming in and out of the library to read!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Williams

The majority of my school are Pre-K-4th grade students who are on free-lunch due to their parents income. We have more than 60% of our school learning English as their second language because they only speak Spanish. They are very energetic students who are "wowed" by the simplest things in life like a drum, piano, or getting to get on a bus and go downtown! I often will have a student ask me to teach them how to play the piano, but I cannot because we have keyboards with no adaptors to make them work. They also love to act in plays and programs that we have at school, but we do not have the necessary costumes to help display the different cultures displayed in our programs. Our holiday programs are usually based around the diverse culture here at our school. From Nigeria to Vietnam, we have them all and like to share the rich culture.
