  • Urban Teens Are Reading!

    Funded Aug 22, 2014

Thank you so much for your donation that brought forty high interest young adult novels to my classroom this week. We were all excited opening the boxes to see the new titles. A handful of the books were even checked out by students to take home and read before they even made it to the classroom library shelves. I can not express how wonderful it is to see my usually apathetic towards reading students excited about books. It truly warms an English teacher's heart!

You are making a difference in my students' lives. It is important that they are motivated and interested in reading. It is important that they see themselves in the characters they are reading about. It is important that they simply read. Thank you again for helping me help my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Cross

  • Knowledge is Power!

    Funded Aug 23, 2014

I am grateful for your donations that funded our project. The students and I were excited to receive all of these great books. Immediately, they began talking about which one they were going to check out. The students demonstrated interest in all of the books; their eyes lit up seeing how much our classroom library had grown!

My students visit my classroom library on a daily basis and check out the books for their own reading pleasure. With the variety that we received, word got out and students from other grade levels also began checking them out; the demand had grown! They carry and read these books all over school. They read during their free time and also complete their reading logs.

This project has really supported my students in their journey towards academic success. Our school focuses on their Lexile reading levels and these books have been the extra push that they need towards literacy. We have already seen an increase in Lexile levels, and I look forward to celebrating their successes!”

  • Books Needed to Improve Classroom Library in High School

    Funded Jul 27, 2014

My students and I would like to thank you for your generosity in supporting literacy at our school. The books I was able to purchase with your donation has had a huge impact on my students and their love of reading. The students are overjoyed at the variety of reading material that I am able to offer them this year thanks to your involvement with Donors Choose and my project.

The students are reading more this year than compared to last year due the increase in books of their reading and interest level. Your donation has improved classroom discussions, and the students are able to make more connections to other content areas based because they have the opportunity to access rich, complex texts.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Grace

  • Encouraging Reluctant Readers

    Funded Jul 24, 2014

Receiving these books was a wonderful way to start the year. My students were excited to have so many books to choose from and were ready to start reading them from day one.

I started by creating a board in my room with recommendations, in order to catch their interest. I then let them choose from the books and partnered the students that had the same book. This allowed them to read at their own pace and still have someone they could talk about the book with.

The greatest outcome of this experience was pulling in many students that would not have picked up a book otherwise. It got them started in a positive way and they have continued to grow.

Thank you so much for providing us these resources.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Salazar

  • Coming Soon to a Bookshelf Near You!

    Funded Aug 7, 2014

Thank you so much for your very generous donation to our classroom project. My students were thrilled when the new books arrived and have not stopped reading them. They have been passed around to a variety of students in my classes, I have even had students come from other classes come and ask to borrow books once they learned we had a bunch of new books. It is wonderful to hear my students tell me that they are reading the books before watching the movies. They are developing a new appreciation for the stories and wanting to enjoy it on the page before seeing it in the theater.

    Thanks again!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Shippy

  • Kids Love To Read!

    Funded Aug 22, 2014

Kids Love to Read has truly been an amazing project in my classroom. This project was designed to implement books that have a variety of lexile levels and are high-interest for high school students. With these books, students were expected to read every day for the first ten minutes of class and complete book projects. One of the book projects we completed was over theme. Students had to identify the theme in their independent book, provide evidence from the book to support the theme, create an inspiring quote that matched the theme, and design a poster with a picture that represented the theme of their book. Students were highly engaged in this project because they were interested in the material, and it was relevant to their lives.

As I'm sure you can imagine, at the beginning of the year when I explain how we are going to use these books in class, students are very hesitant. Every year I always have students complain and tell me how much they hate reading. However, this project really changes their minds! I can't explain how many 10th grade students changed their thinking about reading this year. Many of them beg for more reading time during the day and tell me often how much they enjoy reading now! In fact, they love it so much that my tenth grade students (about 150 students) have read a total of 536 books this year!

By allowing students choice in reading and allowing them time in class to read has improved their attitude towards reading. Because of this project, students passion for reading has dramatically improved.”

  • Classroom Library Books

    Funded Aug 11, 2014

My students are thrilled to know that so many people support them in reaching their educational goals! When I explained to my students that a Donors Choose project had been funded to fill our bookshelves with more Accelerated Reading books they were so excited! After learning the titles of the books that were available to read, they became even more excited!

My students read for a minimum of 30 minutes uninterrupted each day during the school day and any additional minutes they can "steal" when done with classwork or while waiting for further instructions. This has resulted in both my English classes having the most words read in the entire school of 18 classes!

I am so excited to foster a love of reading in each of my students and to hear all about the places and people they meet in their books! I couldn't do it without you! Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Guernsey

  • Building a Classroom Library for Sustained Silent Reading

    Funded Aug 22, 2014

I started a Sustained Silent Reading program in August for the first time. After some research, I realized I for students to have access to more young adult novels. My students love having immediate access to texts, especially young adult ones. They are pretty impressed that random donors would fund over $400 worth of books for them.

We use the resources daily. I devote the first 10-12 minutes of every class to SSR. I allow students to check out books, both the ones I own and the ones bought from the Donor's Choose grant. The Bluford series of young adult African-American novels has seen the most use. I have 4-5 black students who are just devouring those books. The John Green book is also seeing lots of use.

I wanted to kindle or rekindle a love for reading. I simply got tired of students saying they did not read. I believed they simply had not found the right book(s)/author(s). This has proved true. My 74 students have read 135 books so far this semester. The initial goal was 100. Now the goal is 150 by the end of the semester, Jan. 9. It is exciting to see students carrying kindles and actual books, seeing them pull out a book after a quiz to "get some more reading in" as one kid said. This project has worked as well as I had hoped and better than I thought. One early grad personally thanked me for reigniting his love for reading. Numerous kids have said they finally finished their first major novel. It is refreshing to have students asking if they can look through the books on the cases in my room to find a new one after they have finished one. Thank you so much for helping fund this project and giving students access to young adult texts. We need more literate people. We are doing our part.”

  • Popular Books for 8th Grade Literature Circles

    Funded Aug 12, 2014

It started at the beginning of this school year. Students were beyond excited to learn that they had received new books to read. I had a lot of the same students in 8th grade that I taught in 7th; so the relationship was already there. They asked me immediately, "Mrs. Cain, did you get new books?" With a smile, I was able to say yes.

I've had many students that I had to limit the number of the Dystopian novels that they could read. If I didn't limit them, they would be left without an option for the literature circles! They feel so blessed and excited that someone would be willing to donate to our classroom and it is great for them to feel special.

As a teacher, it is always one of my main goals to encourage students to read and find novels that they love -- with these literature circle books, I feel like I am able to do so. There are so many great titles that they students are enjoying reading them individually and as groups. Thank you so much for your generosity. It is people like you that make a difference in the lives of these children... and in the future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Cain

  • We Have No Books!! Please Help Us Start Our Library!

    Funded Jul 7, 2014

We cannot thank you enough for the amazing books you donated to our classroom. The students have absolutely loved reading them and have literally not put them down. In fact, I have to remind the students that it is unsafe to read while walking!!

Everyday, during our 45 minute independent reading period, the students take out their books and begin to read. I circulate the room and hold reading conferences with the students. I have been blown away by how deeply the students are thinking about their characters and how much empathy they are developing. I know that this type of engagement would not be possible without exciting books that make my students WANT to read.

Thanks again for your generosity. You have taught my students that love and support is all around them.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Greenglass
