  • Reluctant Readers Need Riveting Resources

    Funded Aug 24, 2014

Thank you so very much for your support and generosity. My students are so thankful. "Drop everything and read" time is more positive than it has been in years. This is thanks to you.

Students that I had last year have told me that I 'finally have some good books." Students are recommending titles to one another and are excited to finish one book so they may begin another. They are posting in our Google classroom, and the excitement is contagious.

We read for 15 minutes of our 90 minute block each day. Students love that this is time where they control their subject of study. What means the most to me is that they raise questions and examples from their independent books as we study universal topics like theme, conflict, and character development. They wouldn't have this same investment without your help.

Test scores are up. Morale is at a high. Student engagement is through the roof. I cannot thank you enough!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Keller

  • "A RoomWithout Books is Like a Body Without a Soul"

    Funded Sep 21, 2014

I cannot tell you how much your generous gift has meant to my kids. They had no idea that I submitted a project for books, so it would be a surprise for them if it were funded. When I shared that our classroom was receiving new books, I uncovered my back table that had them all laid out for them. They were over the moon, especially over the National Geographic books. They could also not get over that someone all the way from Washington State cared about providing our classroom with brand new books.

I had students write a thank you letter in their journal. Here are some comments that I thought you would enjoy:

    - Thank you so much for donating books to our class. We have a very small bookshelf, and it's not even filled up. It's halfway. There is this book that I have been wanting to read since the movie came out. It's called "The Fault in Our Stars." I wanted to read the book before I watched the movie, so when you donated books to us, the whole class was happy! That was the nicest thing anyone from a different place has done to us. I hope you are happy that you donated books to us.

    - Thank you for all the science books you gave us because we didn't have any before.

    - I want to thank you for all the books you donated to us. That was an awesome gift. My favorites are the Harry Potter, Wolf Rescue, 125 Amazing Pets, all the Hunger Games, Divergent, and Doll Bones. I know that is a lot to say, but I LOVE to read. Thank you.

    - Thank you for getting all these books for us! I will read most of them to show my appreciation for all you have given us. And the one with "125 Amazing Pets" I will read first.

    - Thank you for the books especially "American Born Chinese." That book is gonna be great. I can't wait to read and check it out. Anonymous, thanks for the book you have a blessing coming your way.

    - Thank you for giving us these wonderful books. These books will inspire more children to read and improve grades. I really appreciate that you didn't just get 1 book, but you got more than 1 series of books. I will enjoy reading these books and I think other kids will too.

These are just a few of the many appreciative kids that I have who fell in love with reading. As soon as the books hit the shelf ready to be checked out, the National Geographic books were gone, especially the "125 True Stories of Amazing Pets." I cannot tell you how satisfying it is to see these kids soak of reading and finding joy in it. This has definitely boosted my teaching and students' learning with how receptive they have become with reading and comprehension.”

  • Motivating Students to Read!

    Funded Aug 22, 2014

Thank you so very much for your generous donations. With your donations, our classroom library has grown tremendously. My students and I are so thankful for each of you. I teach many second language learners, and many of them have not had good reading experiences. They often find reading a chore instead of a fun activity. This is often because they struggle with reading in their second language and do not connect to the texts they are assigned. My students are really enjoying the books purchased with your donations because they are books at their level and about topics that interest them. One student told me she didn't like reading until she discovered Gary Soto's books, now she can't stop reading. Another student said he never knew reading could be fun, but he really enjoys reading about teens his age.

My students have really enjoyed being able to choose from the newly added books. So far I have had several students check out books to take home and read, some even took a couple home to read over their Thanksgiving break. Having books at a variety of levels and topics has allowed students to have more choice in what they read. Some students have chosen the same book as another classmate, and they have found that talking about books can be very engaging.

This project has shown me the importance of choice and interest in student achievement. My students are not only seeing the enjoyment of reading for fun, but they are improving all around as students. They are understanding the texts that we are reading in class and having deeper conversations about them. Again, thank you all for inspiring my students to read by donating to our classroom and allowing us to purchase more books for our classroom library!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Silva

  • Literacy Circles

    Funded Jul 2, 2014

Thank you so much for your donation to our classroom. My students are very aware of what Donors Choose is and understand the value of your support. Some of my students are already reading "Mockingjay" and "Divergent" and are giving them rave reviews. Several of the books you purchased for us are teacher resources that not only provide me with deeper insight into the stories but have also been great sources of information for lesson planning and literacy circle activities. They are also awesome assessment tools. Literacy circles are still a part of our routine and my goal of creating an environment in which learning comes from students talking to one another has been accomplished.”

  • Classroom Library

    Funded Jul 30, 2014

Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom library! I have many students so excited to read the books that I received, I had to make a waiting list for them to get a turn! Some of my students exclaimed, "I can finally read Michael Vey!" or, "Wow, I liked the movie Divergent, I wonder if the book is any better?" I love seeing the excitement in their eyes and voices as they talk about these books!

Each trimester, my students pick a book that I read out loud to them. As soon as "Fablehaeven" came in they begged me to read it to them next. They look forward to the last 15 minutes of class each day because I get to read such an interesting book to them.

My students are required to read one book a trimester and write a book report about it. Most of them have picked which book they want to read for all three trimesters! They have resources available in the classroom that inspire them to read more! I love it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Millett

  • Hungry for Reading

    Funded Jul 10, 2014

Thank you so much for your wonderful donations! My students were so excited to receive new novels. They have already begun to read Of Mice and Men as well as To Kill a Mockingbird.

The novels have allowed me to introduce higher vocabulary and challenge the students to think critically. Many students in my classroom struggle with reading and writing and therefore, tend to shy away from such tasks. However, with these novels, they have shown enthusiasm and a desire to read. I am so excited to see how far they have come in such a short time.

My student's are learning things that many people thought they couldn't. Because my students have disabilities, people tend to limit them, and these novels have allowed them to prove that they can do much more than their disability label.

Thank you so much for helping my students to reach new goals, explore new ideas, and expand their understanding!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Rhine

  • The Reading Game

    Funded Aug 22, 2014

Thank you so much for your donations to my classroom. "The Reading Games" project was a success in my classroom. As we started the novel, a few of my students had already read the book and were not as eager to engage in the book again. For my students who had never read the book, this book study opened their minds up and they got a chance to experience a novel for the first time. After reading the book and doing our class instructional activities, my students all had a different view of the book now. My students who read this novel again, explained that they learned more the second go around, they understood the vocabulary words, they looked at another character in a different way, etc. My first time readers were amazed! The best part was when they came to me to ask to check out the remainder books from my classroom library. I am happy to say that at current date, the remaining Hunger Games series has been checked out by my students.

The biggest impact is seeing my students read and ENJOY a book. This novel has helped my class be able to read a novel, hold class discussions, learn new vocabulary words, and the most important, has gotten my class to read.

Thank you again, for your help in providing these books for my class.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goodrich

  • Reading Is Awesome!

    Funded Aug 19, 2014

Thank you so much for the wonderful books. My students are so thrilled to read them. They are writing terrific responses based on their books and they are so motivated to read more and for longer periods of time! My students are really enjoying getting lost in a book and as a result, I am confident that their reading level will improve. They are also having book club discussions and sharing their thoughts about the character's relationships, plots, and themes from the book. Thanks to your generosity, my students think "Reading Is Awesome"!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Greenberg

  • Hungry for Hunger Games Class Set!

    Funded Jul 22, 2014

My students literally screamed with excitement when I told them our class set of The Hunger Games arrived. We have not yet finished the original, but they are already begging me to read Catching Fire with them! Our school has a reputation of being comprised of unmotivated and underachieving readers. However, teachers in our building are doing double takes as they walk by my classroom. They see me begging my students not to read ahead for homework!

When we began the novel, I would read aloud a couple pages, then send my students off to read with their assigned reading partners. This novel study has allowed my students to hone in on their cooperative learning skills, as well as their reading skills. After each chapter, my students are discussing in groups of four. They are eager to share their favorite parts and predictions!

My students are now formally comparing and contrasting Katniss and Peeta in their essays. The beginning stages of three writing samples are attached in the pictures. They are very excited to prove the character inferences that they are making with quotes from the text. I have also shared their work with students from other classes who are asking to read The Hunger Games, as well!

Thank you for providing the perfect resource to start off our school year! I cannot tell you how much happiness you have brought my fifth graders!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Davis

  • Divergent Readers

    Funded Jul 1, 2014

Of course the first thing that most people think about for school are books! However, when you have around 700 students in one school with one library; it makes it hard for all students to read the most popular and most current releases all at the same time. Therefore, when these books reached my classroom my students were elated that they could read these popular novels.

Within hours of placing the books on my shelves in my classroom library, they were already checked out and being vigorously read! Now when I look at the books their bindings are creased, the covers are a little tattered and the pages are dog-eared! All of these things are a good sign that they are well loved. There are even some students that are asking their peers if they can have the book next.

This project was create to encourage a love of reading within a population of struggling readers and I think that is exactly what it has done.

The entire fifth and myself are truly appreciative of your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Leonard
