  • Help Us Catch Some Fire!

    Funded Jun 12, 2012

Dear Adam, Junk my Car Team, Roben, Elise and Irwin, Barbara Hallock, Lenae, Courtney, Ms. Barrios, An inspiration, Whitney Robinson, and reddit,

My students could not wait to open the boxes of books when they arrived at my door. They knew that they would finally be able to read a brand new book; for some students, this will be the very first time in their lives. Because I teach mainly children with special needs, these resources are an invaluable commodity to myself and my classroom library. They will be able to experience the thrill and action of the HG series just like students in the regular education classes.

They cannot put them down, and I am so thrilled to see them excited about reading. Thanks again for supporting literacy in the public schools.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Carson

  • Struggling to Succeed...Need Technology PLEASE!!!

    Funded Apr 25, 2012

I cannot even begin to thank you enough for your generous donation to my classroom and to the many students that I instruct. Your donation of the two Kindle Fires and The Hunger Games Trilogy has meant the world to my students. I have never seen my students so excited, or engaged, in their reading!

The two Kindle Fires have greatly added to my classroom instruction. They are used daily to aid my struggling learners by providing them with a multitude of engaging texts at their appropriate reading level that had not been available to them before. My students no longer feel self-conscious about their reading abilities and have gained so much confidence in themselves as readers.

The donation of the Hunger Games Series has also meant so much to my students! It is such a joy to have my students begging for additional reading time because they just can't stop reading. There is nothing better than helping reluctant readers become excited about reading all over again. The Hunger Games Books are constantly in my students' hands and have led them to consistently engage in rich discussions highlighting the many literature elements that have been taught with little to no prompting. My students are eager to share their thoughts and voice their opinions in a constructive manner while analyzing the text. My students have really begun to grasp these literature components as a result of being so engaged in the books your company so kindly donated.

From the bottom of my heart, I again just want to say thank you so much! You truly have no idea what a difference your donation has made for my students and how much they appreciate your kindness.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Geijer

  • Hunger Games for Reluctant Readers

    Funded Feb 3, 2012

Thank you so much for your generous gift of the Hunger Games. Our class received 12 copies of the Hunger Games novel and the Audio CD to accompany the book. The audio CD has been so important to us because it keeps the students engaged. I have found in the past, student get overwhelmed with long books and give up!

My students last year read the Hunger Games at the very end of the year. There really wasn't enough time after testing was finished, but they were so excited, I had to find a way! We read until the very very last day of school. For that reason, you will have to excuse the fact that the thank you letters are from my current students. My students last year lovvvvvved Hunger Games. It did as I hoped and sparked a love of reading in numerous of my students. Many went on to see the movie and to purchase the additional books. Many of my students went out and bought their own copy to read at home because they couldn't wait to read it!

We will start reading Hunger Games next week so that we will have plenty of time to relish this wonderful book. Thank you for the bottom of my heart for your generosity. I thank you and my students do as well!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jay

  • Hungry for Hunger Games

    Funded Feb 7, 2012

Thank you for your donation! Your help allowed my 6th grade students to receive a class set of the novel, Hunger Games. The novel is in serious high demand at our school. Beyond my expectations!. My students, even students that do not typically want to read , moaned when the bell rang asking "...to read just one more chapter." What a great feeling to see students enjoy reading and to want more. What a great gift to give; the love of reading. Not only has my class benefited from your generous donation, but so has numerous other classes and grades. The novel was in a state of constant movement between classes during the school year. In fact, at the end of the year, the books were very difficult to track down. Again, thank you for you generous donation and your positive impact on not only the 6th grade students, but also our 7th & 8th grade students as well. Furthermore, I anticipate the Hunger Games impacting many additional students for years to come.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Reep

  • The Hunger Games: We Need Books

    Funded Dec 16, 2011

Thank you so much! You have given my students book they would not have been able to procure otherwise and opened up a whole world to them. But more than that, what they will gain in ability to critically analyze and to infer meanings about people and situations, they will take those skills with them their entire lives. We will all benefit from an educated, literate society.

With a budget shortfall for education affecting millions of students, your generosity has side-stepped that stumbling block for my students. They love this book! Their first writing scores have already risen significantly. They are more willing to tackle substantial, complex writing prompts and think their way through an issue in depth. Reading has opened their minds to a greater reality.

My students are like toddlers in a candy store with this book! In this poverty-area school, textbooks get written on and damaged in many ways quickly. But these 30 HUNGER GAMES novels are still in pristine condition, even after being handled by six classes a day, approximately 150 students every day. To further underscore how much they love these books, four went "missing" right away for the weekend and were returned mysteriously the next Monday in perfect condition. Students cannot afford to buy the books, so they "borrowed" the books to read them! What you have done for my students is amazing...our state scores just came back and my classes passed at 94%.”

    Ms. Lawton

  • Help Bronx Students Find the Mockingjay!

    Funded Dec 18, 2011

Thank you so much for your donation of Mockingjay! With my 8th grade literature class, we read the Hunger Games in the fall (and saw the movie too of course), Catching Fire in the Winter and Mockingjay this spring. I think its safe to say it was Hunger Games themed year this in literature and my students loved every minute. My students and I greatly appreciate your kindness and generosity, as we would not have been able to complete the trilogy without your thoughtful donation. Your donation will be appreciated and remembered for years to come. ”

  • KIPPsters Hunger to Read!!!

    Funded May 3, 2012

Thank you so much for your donation to my teaching project! I am happy that our students will now have access to the Hunger Games text while they independently read. These texts will enable our students to become more independent and imagine a world outside of their own. Vocabulary acquisition is a major part of middle school development as well as the ability to access a difficult text. I am very grateful for your contribution to our students and their future. I will be sure to maximize the generous donation you have provided our learning community. These texts will transform not only the minds of our students, but they will also help invigorate my thinking, planning, and instruction. Once again I just wanted to take the time to express how great my gratitude is to you both for providing such a valuable resource to my students. Thank you for making that impact.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Thanos

  • Hungering For "The Hunger Games"

    Funded Dec 15, 2011

I cannot begin to tell you just how much your donations meant to my classes. Thanks to the class set of The Hunger Games, not only was I able to have an impact on two of my classes, many other students throughout the school were able to tap into a wonderful series without having to wait for library copies to be available.

While we are lucky at my school to have access to varied types of literature for English instruction, the great majority of my students haven't been able to find a connection to the literature. This book series allowed many to really get into what they were reading for the first time. Not only that, but because they were truly interested in The Hunger Games many were able to retain information from the novel and make connections to other works that much easier.

Thank you again for your act of kindness,Ms. K.”

  • Books Rock!

    Funded Jan 30, 2012

To All Who Selected Our Project,

On behalf of myself and all my students, I want to thank you for selecting our project, "READING ROCKS!". As a result, our classroom reading library has expanded with new, interesting, and entertaining book titles, encouraging students to read more. Many of my students have seen their reading grade equivalent go up one year in growth, and for some, all the way up to five years. They have learned that the more more books they read, the better reader they become. Having books available in the classroom also makes it easier for them to check-out books. As an English teacher, I love seeing my student become life -long readers. Your gift is greatly appreciated, and since books get passed on and on, it is a gift that keeps on giving. ”

  • Hungry for Something New: A Class Set of The Hunger Games

    Funded Jan 30, 2012

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the donations that we received to fund our Hunger Games project. Thanks to your generous donation we were able to acquire 40 copies of the novel for use in two English classes. Next year the books will also be used again for another group of 8th graders. Overall these 40 copies will probably be read by hundreds of middle school students in the next few years.

The students who started reading the Hunger Games novels were very interested in the book, especially since it was coinciding with the release of the movie. Students who had previously shown little interest in reading were quite interested in a story involving teenagers in a science fiction world. I have never seen students who looked forward to continuing a story and were actually upset when we had to do something other than read from a book. I feel that this book made the last year of middle school quite memorable for all of them.

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Zarian
