  • Diverse Summer Reading Material For Active Imaginations!

    Funded May 6, 2022

I am so grateful for the donations that made this project a success. There's a phrase in education- "avoid the summer slide" - that implies that students' skills and learning may decrease over the summer if they aren't reading or using their critical thinking skills regularly.

And while I am not sure if that is true, I always want to provide my students with new, diverse texts to read. Especially over the summer. It's so awesome to see kids pick out books they like. Or books they're interested in. And then come back in the fall to talk about them.

Because of your donations, we were able to get so many current, popular books that my students really wanted to read.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Usher

  • Diverse Texts in the Secondary ELA Classroom

    Funded Apr 8, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donations. Since I have expanded my library to include diverse texts more students have begun taking an interest in reading. No longer am I having to force the kids to turn in book reports or complete novel studies, they are now actually looking forward to doing them. It has been exciting to watch my students grow as they participate more in class discussions, expressing their views of the world while understanding how important identity, family, and friends are for them.”

  • Poetry With a Purpose

    Funded May 6, 2022

Thank you for your thoughtful and kind donation to our classroom and a wide variety of cultural poetry for our students. The kids were thrilled to read from notorious poetic authors that discussed topics and addressed issues so relevant to the students own struggles. It was a great end to the school year and students were thrilled to be able to express themselves with art and poetry, and to find rest and relaxation in the poems they read together. Thank you for contributing to a wildly fantastic fourth quarter.”

  • Students See Themselves in the Books They Read!

    Funded May 3, 2022

My students have read about 60 pages of Kino and the King and have been loving every page! I want to give you all a big MAHALO for your donations. Many have voiced that they love reading a book based in Hawaii about Hawaiians. It really means a lot for them to see themselves in the books they are reading.

Many of them have already asked what we are reading next and have begun to look into the future texts as they can't wait to dive into more books. These books will be used for many years to come.

    Me ke aloha,

    Kiliona”

    With gratitude,

  • Building a Diverse Library Fit for Our Young Kings!

    Funded May 26, 2022

Thank you for gifting our Young Kings with the tools and knowledge they need to understand and eliminate racism, bigotry, and inequality, by donating to a new classroom library that can be used during guided reading and argumentative writing. Accessing our new library helps Young Kings understand our criminal justice system and the legacy of racial injustice. It is also being used to introduce them to a range of cultures and unique literacy devices used by each author to introduce new themes and approaches to writing. The diverse library will also inspire unique perspectives.

Our classroom now offers a variety of materials to differentiate lessons and afford students a diverse library. This allows students access to multiple ways of learning and a diverse selection of text that is interesting and aligned with the curriculum. Thank you for providing a diverse collection of books that helps students remain engaged in the lessons.”
