My Project

My goal for this project is to create a sensory-friendly learning environment that supports students as they develop essential life skills while also learning how to regulate their bodies and emotions. Many of my students experience sensory sensitivities that can make it difficult to stay focused, engaged, and comfortable in a traditional classroom setting. By providing access to thoughtfully selected tools—such as noise-reducing headphones, fidget items, weighted supports, and visual schedules—I aim to reduce sensory overwhelm and create a space where all students can participate in learning with greater confidence and independence.

This project goes beyond simply providing materials; it emphasizes explicitly teaching students how to recognize their own sensory and emotional needs and choose appropriate strategies to support themselves.

Through guided practice and consistent routines, students will learn to identify when they feel overwhelmed, under-stimulated, or unfocused, and independently select tools that help them regulate. This skill-building approach empowers students to develop self-awareness and self-management strategies that are critical not only for academic success but also for everyday life.

Ultimately, the goal is to equip each student with a personalized “toolkit” of strategies they can carry with them across environments. By fostering independence, improving focus, and reducing behavioral barriers to learning, this project will help ensure that every student has the support they need to succeed in school and beyond, regardless of their individual sensory or emotional needs.
