Because of you, I was able to supply my emergent bilingual students with books that reflect them and their culture. \r\n\r\nIt is important for bilingual teens to have access to books that reflect their languages and cultures because it helps them feel seen, valued, and respected. When young people see characters who speak like them, live in similar communities, or celebrate the same holidays, they are more likely to connect emotionally with the stories. This connection encourages a love for reading and builds confidence in their identities. Representation also shows them that their language and culture are not just acceptable but worthy of being celebrated in literature, which can be empowering during a time when teens are forming a strong sense of self.\r\n\r\nBooks that reflect bilingual teens' backgrounds also support language development and cultural understanding. Reading in both their languages helps reinforce vocabulary, grammar, and literacy skills in ways that are meaningful and engaging. It also allows teens to explore their cultural heritage more deeply and take pride in it. At the same time, these books can help bridge cultural gaps between students and their peers or teachers by promoting empathy and awareness. In this way, diverse books serve not only as mirrors for bilingual teens but also as windows for others to learn and grow.","fullyFundedDate":1727350294341,"projectUrl":"project/multilingualculturally-responsive-books/8813598/","projectTitle":"Multilingual/Culturally Responsive Books for Mental Health","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bierce","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9773639_orig.jpg?crop=616,616,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1727213133005","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9773639"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_21804","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2109,"numTeachers":154,"percentFrplEligible":40,"percentAsian":22,"percentBlack":9,"percentWhite":54,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"13.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.6,"schoolId":21804,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Shaker High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Shaker High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-york/north-colonie-central-schools/shaker-high-school/21804"}
