Manhattan Virtual Academy is a free public school in USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden. The wonderful part of being virtual is that ANY child in the state of Kansas may enroll with us as a school. The challenge, not all my students are local, nor do I know what their local communities may have as resources to support education and more specifically, science. \r\n\r\nYour gift has allowed me to make bags to deliver to my students in third, fourth, or fifth grade with the resources they need to meet the rigor of the science standards in Kansas. Having manipulatives such as seeds, soils, rocks, minerals, magnets, and items such as the ecosystems kit and butterfly habitat has opened up a world of inquiry and exploratory learning which my students previously would have missed out on. The joy students get when I do a home visit or mail their package of supplies is evident. I get texts or calls from families who cannot wait to do science together. \r\n\r\nOur school does not receive Title One funds, nor is virtual funded at the same amount as in person in Kansas. We get 1/3 the funding per student. This means that as educators, I do not get a yearly classroom budget to help off set costs of items which may be consumable that students can use to help them understand ideas and concepts. Thank you for being willing to give. Thank you for supporting scientific thinking and wonder. Thank you for pushing me to be a better educator. \r\n\r\nAttached you will see some examples of student work with their materials as well as a picture of when I met with a student and we opened the boxes together. It was a wonderful day.
