  • Running Out of Color!

    Funded Jan 15, 2025

WOO HOO! The Color is back in room 301! My Color Printer has been getting lighter and lighter as we rolled into the new year. Today, I was able to open her up and refill her emptying reservoirs anew.

The kiddos were actually more excited about the colorful dry erase markers - and that they were pen like instead of marker like - easier to write with they said.

So we are restocked with color and ready to tackle the second half of fifth grade. Thank you for helping restore the color into our classroom for 2025.

Your caring and donations are greatly appreciated!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

  • Cold and Flu Season Is Upon Us!

    Funded Dec 10, 2024

As you know, the winter virus influx is just starting - and sure to get ramped up more due to holiday travel. Over a year ago a donor donated a large room Clorox hepa don carbon filter air cleaner and an extra filter. So getting a new filter just in time will ensure that we stay as healthy as possible with 28 people stuffed into a small classroom all day.

I brought in a bunch of hot cocoa packs and just waiting for one of "those days" to break out the kettle, put on a video, and serving hot cocoa packs- and just relaxing as a class.

The biggest WHAT IS THAT? is the vibration plate. The principal even came up to try it. The kids are super excited to come up at lunch and "shake". Between this and the VR, my class is the place to be during lunch.

    Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

  • Wheels Down - Looping Up

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

When I told the kiddos that we were getting a replacement author's chair, they were totally excited. We are working on a unit in literacy now on Human Rights and digging deep into a novel called "Esperanza Rising". It deals with a lot of human rights violations and is set in Mexico and California in the agricultural areas 100 years ago. They are enjoying finding the different violations and a really good story at the same time. When we approach the end of this unit they will have to do writing about Human Rights and created a PSA. I can't wait to see their hard work come to life. Now, they will have a fancy new chair to sit in to show them.

The air cleaner for the room could not come at a better time. It is only the second week of school and my class is starting to sound like a Tuberculosis Ward. So many coughs, sore throats, and not feeling wells.... And it isn't even cold and flu season yet.

For both of these items, we thank yoU!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

  • Have You Heard About Scholastic News!

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

As you may know, Covid disrupted learning for our students and we are still trying to fill in the gaps. Scholastic news and Scholastic Storytime are great fiction and nonfiction grade appropriate text bundles that the children look forward to..

We use them as Friday Fun Reading! The high interest, grade level reading experiences are going to hook them as readers and allow them access in a friendly approachable way.

Now we have a touchstone to look forward to each week, and the fact that it is digital means it can be done in person, online, individually, small group, or whole class. Options! For a teacher, options are everything to reach all learners.

    Thank you!”

  • Precision Place Value Practice!

    Funded Aug 30, 2024

Thank you so much for supporting our classroom and learning. These tools and resources will surely help my kiddos practice place value from the billions all the way down to decimal form in the thousandths!

This can be tricky for students to master, but with continued practice and the ability to share and review work quickly, we can address misunderstanding and applaud good work.

Again, I can't thank you enough. The kiddos were super excited to receive this gifts and add them to our centers.

    Thank yoU!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

  • Targeted FULL COLOR Learning Centers

    Funded May 6, 2024

Switching curriculums is always a bit of a challenge. We just get used to one thing - and they completely change the programs and we are back to square one.

The new programs both require loads of centers that you must create on your own. The man hours are a bit overwhelming but we are making our way through.

The color printer has allowed me to make color centers and has allowed students to print their work out in full color, with pride.

I truly appreciate the refills in ink and the extra center envelopes. Your generosity truly has made an impact on my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

  • Centers, Centers Everywhere!

    Funded Dec 23, 2023

This year has been the roughest one for us teachers since covid. Not only are students showing the gaps in learning, but the school system decided to change both our Math and Literacy programs, so it feels like we are starting from scratch.

Both the Math and Literacy programs rely on the use of centers to extend learning for our students. That means lots of copying, laminating, cutting, stuffing, arranging, and organizing learning opportunities for our kiddos.

On top of that, we have tremendous budget cuts this year so there is literally no extra money for us to do what we are being asked to do. This is the life of a teacher in NYC in 2023/2024.

Thank you for making our centers a possibility with your donation. We are working hard to make sure the new programs are successful, and hopefully closing the learning gaps that were created by Covid.

    Again, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

  • Education in Full Color!

    Funded Dec 12, 2023

WOW! I can't tell you how excited the kids were today when the Color Printer arrived. So much of our new curriculum is based on student produced work which is great, but when it only printed in black and white and they used so many great drawings, photos, etc - it just falls short.

Now their hard work can be shared the way it was intended, in full color. The printer also has a scanner which will enable us to scan and import work as well. The refillable ink is much cheaper and hopefully I will be able to keep up with this in the future so students in future classes will also benefit.

Again, thank you for making a HUGE COLORFUL impact on our students daily lives. They will rejoice in sharing their hard work now.. IN LIVING COLOR!”

  • Personalized Practice On IXL Learning!

    Funded Oct 30, 2023

Thank you so much for donating and making this project come to life. I can't tell you what a help it has been using IXL in our classroom. We have two brand new curriculums this year and the students are struggling. They are simply not used to the format and flow of the new programs. Quite honestly, neither is the staff, but that is an entirely different problem to tackle.

The great thing about IXL is they have what is called SKILLED PRACTICE and I can literally pick the exact lesson and skill that aligns with our new curriculums (Illustrative Math and EL Literacy). The kiddos get extra practice with the skills and concepts and they get instruction/reteach in an additional format, not just from me. They have fun and learn at the same time.

When they have free time, parents were thrilled that they can log in at home and practice not just our daily skills, but skills they are lacking and need to close the gap. The program has self paced, individualized learning as well.

    Again, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. McDougall

I am a 5th grade teacher in Washington Heights. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Many of them come to school knowing that they will have at least two meals today, the free breakfast and lunch offered at my school. I know it is my job, if only for seven hours, to make them feel smart, empowered, and hopeful. They don't have the easiest lives, but they are working hard and making the best of it. As their teacher, it is my job to give them every advantage, experience, and learning opportunity I can. It isn't easy! Don't get me wrong, it is a tough job, but I absolutely love it!
