Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am Speech Teacher. All of my students are severely handicapped with multiple disorders. They all need speech services. Many need OT and PT too. The types of goals they have range from feeding/swallowing to expressive language needs. Many of them are using AAC devices.

My students that are struggling with joint attention and ASD have difficulties focusing on the computer screen for our sessions.

I need something that will grab their attention. They run away from the screens because there is not something tangible keeping them rooted to their spot. They need highly engaging materials to keep their attention to a screen for a 1/2 hour.

My Project

I want puppets to use with my students virtually. Puppets are a good way to grab their attention to what is happening on the screen. It is hard for many of my students to focus on a screen. Puppets can also help illustrate speech work supported by literacy. They can also be used as models for social pragmatic skills (how do we say hi/bye, how to ask a question, personal space, etc) as well as models to demonstrate use of core vocabulary.

Some research shows that puppetry helps students with ASD communicate in ways they did not before.

There are student who will not respond or communicate with other people, but will talk to a puppet. Puppets will provide the opportunity for some students to vocalize. Since my students are not in a school building, they have a finite number of people they are speaking to each day. I want to incorporate "someone" else they can talk to or interact with.
