Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach six different classes of sixth and seventh graders at a large middle school in northern Los Angeles County. My "scholars," as I call them, are a diverse group of students, mostly Hispanic and African American, most reading far below grade level. Since they struggle with reading comprehension, I often read to them. When I read aloud to them in class, they are mesmerized, even if it is in a distance learning, virtual, "Zoom" environment. I teach them to "Read with OOMPH" (with passion, character voices, and expression) as I do. It is so inspirational when I see them try to mimic my reading style!

My Project

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, my students are all required to participate in distance learning for seven hours a day, looking at a computer screen.

My young scholars are constantly waiting for me to "share my screen" to bring up one program or another, while I try to interact with them via Zoom behind the screen I am projecting to them.

If I had a second monitor, apart from my laptop screen, I could better read their facial expressions, check for understanding, and determine if they are paying attention and learning what they should be for each lesson. It would make a huge difference!
