I currently sponsor an all-girls engineering club for girls in 4th and 5th grades with a total of 30 girl participants. The club's name is "Engineering Girls for a 'Stem-gineering' World". The purpose of the club is to introduce girls - especially minority girls - to STEM activities and opportunities. Although the club is free to participants, all girls must sumbit an application for review to be a participant of this club.
My school is a Title 1 school, and the majoity of our school's student population is Hispanic (55%) and/or African American (9%).
My demographics of the girls in my club closely represent our school's student population.
I have just attended a Sphero Symposium where I learned about the many teaching opportunities available by using teaching coding in the classroom and using it across CORE subject areas. Unfortunately, very few of the students in our school have been to exposed to coding in an academic setting. I beleive that if a student knows how to code, he/she has been exposed to that ouside of the school day.
My Project
The majority of the girls that are part of my "Engineering Girls" Club have never been exposed to coding in any environment. I have asked for a total of 15 Sphero Bolts which would allow my 30 girls to work collaboratively in groups of 2 to learn coding in a safe and fun environment.
Currently, our club has 0 Sphero Bolts.
Therefore, every one that we receive for our club is a step in the right direction to get girls (especially minority girls) exposed and learn coding at an earlier age.
The Engineering Girls Club will have a hands-on opportunity to learn and practice coding with the Sphero Bolts.
