Our school is a therapeutic day school program, the task of which is to provide emotional support and academic opportunities to children who have been unable to succeed in community school settings due to emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. The majority of our students live at a residential children's home and are wards of the state.
Our school runs as a trauma-informed program, aiming to help our students grow from their pasts and learn how to cope in effective ways.
Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredible children. Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming and safe community and to help my students explore learning and grow into independent and productive citizens.
My Project
Zentangle is a self-help art therapy practice to enhance relaxation and focus. The art creates structured designs through drawing various patterns. The repetitive nature of this art style is soothing, simple, and teaches how to reframe mistakes (just make it a part of your pattern!).
My students are drawn to art, and I just know that teaching the practice of Zentangle art will be a preferred coping skill for many of my students to rely on.
My project requests 8 kid-centered workbooks to teach Zentangling, and the specific paper that Zentangle artists use. I plan to use these materials a few days per week to explore the art of Zentangle and explicitly teach my students how art can help them cope with big and uncomfortable emotions.
