Zen Den. Mental Health Matters

Help me give my students a "Zen Den," a place to calm down, take a break, defuse anger, and re-center outside of the classroom. Students need a space where they can go to de-escalate emotions or anxiety.

My Project

The calming studio is an additional resource that will allow students an outlet to cope, heal, and embrace their potential. Mental health is a vital part of our overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked and stigmatized. To that end, students tend to have difficulty coping and the lack of coping skills manifests itself in myriad ways such as inappropriate conduct or speech.

We will create a calming studio to help students develop coping skills.

The items listed were selected for the following reasons:

- The LED lighting in our classrooms and the lack of natural light can be overwhelming to an overstimulated brain. The blue lighting “accelerates the relaxation process after stress in comparison with conventional white lighting.” Studies have found that stressed people immersed in blue light relaxed three times as quickly as in white light.

- Aromatherapy- When inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and especially impact the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain.

- Zero gravity recliners favor muscle relaxation and have a beneficial effect on so many health aspects; they also help reduce stress.
