Help Ms. DiTomasso

I am a third grade teacher. I teach in New York. This school is a Title I school located in a lower socio-economic community where 93% of the children receive free breakfast and lunch everyday. Many of these children are English Language Learners and their parents are immigrants who do not speak the English language. Third grade is a very tough grade for the children because it is considered a transition grade. The children are maturing and becoming more independent. They must prepare for their first year taking citywide examinations in both reading and math. There is a lot of pressure on these children in the third grade. For this reason, I try to make learning as fun as I can. I try to motivate the children by providing them with many opportunities to play educational games throughout the school day. They love playing games on the computer. I currently have 2 Mac computers in my classroom for the children to use. We do all kinds of research on the computers also. The school is equipped with wireless internet service, however, having only 2 computers available for a class of 22 creates a problem because it takes a while for every child to get a chance. Another problem is that classroom space is limited and desktop computers take up a lot of space. It would be a great deal of help if we had a laptop computer in our classroom that can be transported from desk to desk. This would alleviate our problem with space and it would be easier for the children to access the computer. I really believe the children should be computer literate nowadays and have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the technology of the world they live in. Since most of these children come from families which are relatively poor, the only opportunity they have to work with computers is in school. I know having this computer would help me teach them and help them become successful in their future years. I would like to take the opportunity to thank you in advance for your consideration and commend the way you try to help the children of the future!
