Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from across the Bronx to receive a high quality, well rounded music education. We are a Title I school, with most of our students from low-income families. Inside and outside of the classroom, our students face challenges head on, working to be the best musicians and people that they can be.

We supply every student with an instrument and believe that a music education is key to success in high school, college and beyond.

Our school offers various concert bands and jazz bands as curricular ensembles during the school day. After school, students may choose from extracurricular musical activities such as Saxophone Quartet, All-Girl’s Jazz Band, and Chamber Music. Our students consistently dedicate their time before and after school to become better musicians. Their dedication to their musicianship is evident through their rapid growth.

We are committed to exposing our diverse students to life outside of NYC, and have traveled to Florida and Europe. Through extensive travel for performances, our students have made the world their classroom.

My Project

This year, our Wind Ensemble will be traveling to Florida to perform at Walt Disney World in front of a world wide audience! They were chosen to perform through a competitive audition process. Students fundraise all year to make this experience possible.

Adding an educational workshop to this performance trip will provide students with the opportunity to refine their skills and explore careers in music.

Here is a description of the workshop from the Disney Website:

"Your group will examine the skills, attitudes and priorities essential to musical excellence. This 2-1/2-hour workshop culminates in a very special finale—a recording of your ensemble performing Disney music, accompanied by footage from a classic Disney animated film."
