My Students

Movers and shakers! I have tried to incorporate projects, movement and discovery to our school day. However, six hours can be a long day for anyone, especially ten year olds. I want to be able to help my students stay focused by giving them the option to stand or sit during any part of their day with ergonomically fit desks.

Visiting my classroom you would likely see students circled around one desk excitedly brainstorming an idea or gathered on the floor sharing ideas.

My students are energetic and excited to learn. They are eager to create and move. The confinement of traditional desks goes against the environment of our classroom.

My Project

Six hours can be a long time for anyone, but it is especially hard for children! I am hoping to replace our standard school desks with Sit/Stand Desks. I am using a variety of sources in this endeavor because it is quite a significant financial commitment.

Research shows that students are more focused and engaged when standing.

I have witnessed my students begin to stand and some even pace as they start to get involved in a project or work through multi-step math problems. This signals to me that they are thinking. They are involved and actively participating in their learning. On the other hand, slouching in the traditionally too small, confining desks becomes a common sitting position. The slouching posture signals to me as the teacher the student is becoming lethargic and uninvolved.

Think of yourself as you try to get comfortable for a 2 or 3 hour airplane flight or in a theater for a 2 hour movie. Asking ten year olds to sit in small desks for large blocks of time is unrealistic and unhealthy. Please consider helping my class to make this important change. Your donation will help buy desks that will be used for years to come. Thank you!
