My Students

I teach in a Title I public middle school in Brooklyn. My students come from many different countries, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, China, the United States, Yemen, Pakistan, and Ecuador. Together, we study Social Studies and learn about the values, customs, and beliefs that have shaped America's history. As you can imagine, my students' experiences truly enrich the learning inside our classroom.

My students love listening to songs from Hamilton and the stories of reactions by the native Taino people when they first encountered Christopher Columbus.

This storytelling pulls them in and gets them interested and invested to do the hard work that I ask of them. My students are expected to read critically, analyze multiple historical perspectives, and reflect all that they have learned in their writing. It is challenging work, but every year my students continue to impress me by asking thoughtful questions and placing themselves in the shoes of those who have come before them.

My Project

In order for my students to truly succeed, they need to have the tools to do so. That's why this project goes such a long way in making their lives easier the first few weeks in September as they get adjusted to new teachers and their new schedule.

Year after year, one of the biggest struggles I find for middle school students is they have difficulty staying organized, and this project helps reduce both the emotional and financial stress of purchasing school supplies for the new year.

I will be teaching American history to 150 7th grade students. Approximately 90 of my students are English Language Learners, special education students, or both. They will fill their pages in their blue notebooks with information about the American Revolution, the 13 colonies, slavery, and Native Americans. Every new marking period, they will receive a different color folder to keep all their reading and writing assignments. We will use the new sharpies to label our supplies and other stations around the classroom to create systems that will help my students have a successful school year!
