I teach a second grade gifted class in N.Y.C.  Our school is Title I and 96% of the students classify for free or reduced lunch.

This year, the budget at our school was cut my a 1/4 of a million dollars.  Part of this budget was our science cluster teacher.  In addition, we have not been able to get materials for our class.  Sadly, at this moment in time, my science center consists solely of science books and a single magnifying glass.

My students are extremely eager to learn and need hands-on opportunities to tap into every learning style present in our class.  By funding my project, my students will be able to better understand and connect to the scientific concepts that we will focus on this year.  Within the science discovery chest, there are resources that support our units on magnets and earth materials.  In addition, during center time, students can partake in activities in other areas of interests in science.  The discovery tubs will help students to learn about the topics covered within our curriculum, including earth materials, living and non-living things and force and motion.  The microscope and prepared slides will allow students to study different organisms close-up.  It will also help them to become more independent in the scientific endeavors.  The magnetic wands and iron filing disks will form a magnet center where students can learn about magnets and how they can move iron filings around.  Students will love the hands on experience and because the iron filings are inside a clear disk, there will be no chance for a mess.

With your help, 21 gifted and talented students can thrive, rather than being denied a chance to learn and understand the important scientific concepts they need to know.  Thank you for even reading my proposal.  It is the first step towards helping an incredibly eager to learn group of students.
