My Students

My students are thoughtful learners and creative thinkers! As students living in a large urban city with many high needs, including learning English, they love hands-on projects and working together to problem-solve. This year will be one of the most difficult starts to the school year because we are starting fully remote. Students will be expected to learn from home through a Chromebook. Despite these challenges, my students and I are resilient and determined to create authentic virtual learning experiences.

My hope is that my students are able to engage in meaningful hands on activities during their virtual lessons at home.

My Project

"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." This philosophy is critical to effective teaching and student learning. The majority of our 6th grade Science curriculum is STEM based. Normally, in class, students would be using laboratory tools to analyze and collect data in order to draw scientific conclusions. They would be working with various materials to design and redesign prototypes in order to solve problems. This year we are remote for the first 10 weeks of school, leaving them without access to these critical activities in the classroom.

Your donation would provide all the tools and materials necessary for students to participate in scientific inquiry and the engineering design process at home.

The materials listed will allow students to use tape measures, thermometers, and graduated cylinders during virtual scientific inquiry. I will also be able to create three engineering design projects: building straw towers, designing a catapult, and a marshmallow spaghetti challenge. These projects will increase student engagement and offer authentic STEM experiences during our virtual units and lessons.
