Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an elementary education teacher in a second-grade classroom in the Bronx, New York. My students are a diverse group of learners with a range of needs and interests. They are fun, smart, outgoing, and have a deep desire to learn. Now more than ever, these students long to be working in groups while being engaged with new physical books to use during guided reading.

My Project

During the pandemic, we sent many of our students home with books from our classroom libraries so they may be able to read physical books at home. Many of these texts never made it back to our libraries and that's okay! At the time, my goal was to keep them reading and engaged at home.

Now, we are working hard to battle the challenges some of our young readers face by affording them the opportunity to have a wide selection of books with diverse and engaging characters to enjoy in class.

Adding high-interest stories to our library will help motivate our young readers and make their reading experience fun! Our class recently read the first book in the Dyamonde Daniels series and the students couldn't put their books down. They fell in love with the plot and unique characters.

Our readers are eager to read the next book in the Dyamonde Daniels series to learn what happens next with their favorite characters Dyamonde and Free. With this collection, the students will be able to make meaningful connections to characters with similar family dynamics who live in nearby Washington Heights while practicing important reading skills and building their reading stamina.
