Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am blessed to teach drama in a Queens middle school. I teach grades 6 through 8, and this year I teach mostly Special Education, which I also love. I am very fortunate to be able to develop a special drama curriculum for special education.

Recently, I began a new playwriting workshop which my students have really been enjoying! It is an excellent outlet for them to be able to express themselves creatively, especially for my non-verbal students. My students respond positively to using picture books as a catalyst for creating a character. They have difficulty coming up with completely new people on their own, yet, when given a picture that peaks their interest, they are able to create an entire character profile with ease!

I would love to have a picture book library so that my students can have endless resources with which to create their characters. Because I see them several times throughout the week, I am quickly running out of interesting and thought-provoking source material that will inspire them to think creatively and put their pens to the paper.

I cannot express to you just how important it is to have drama in the special education curriculum. Playwriting is an excellent outlet for them to really use the creative thinking skills as well as to learn how to craft a well made play. Playwriting will undoubtedly enhance their literary skills as well. Your donation would ensure that my present students, as well as my future drama students, will have the resources they need to spark their creativity!
