Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title I school in Houston, Texas. Many of the students live in the government housing around the school. The children come from many different backgrounds. The school population is primarily Hispanic and African American children.

They are amazing students who work hard every day to overcome the challenges they are presented with inside and outside of the classroom.

When given the opportunity, I have seen my students create wonderful music either through instruments, rapping, or singing. They get excited when they see the connections between music, math, and science. My students love learning about the world through the music of different cultures.

My Project

Musicians need music stands in order to practice their music while maintaining proper posture. Poor posture makes it more difficult to play instruments, and results in poor tone quality. Many students stop trying to read their music, because they are straining their backs and necks to see the music on the floor. The students end up pushing the instrument too close to their bodies which results in awkward arm, hand, wrist, and finger positioning. On the ukulele the students end up covering the wrong strings. On recorder the students are not completely covering holes. I know the students will be excited to sit in a chair or stand while playing the recorder and the ukulele.

Students will be able to play richer and more complex music with the aid of music stands.

Music stands will allow me to have up to six different instrumental parts in a piece of music. Currently I place their different music parts on the board or tape the music to chairs. Music stands will help the students concentrate on their parts better, and give them a sense of professionalism when they are performing music in the classroom and on the stage.

Students will be able to use the music stands to practice their music in groups of six when we are rotating through different music stations. I can create two groups of six if I have students of similar abilities sharing stands.
