Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Math proficiency is the gateway to a number of incredible careers that students may never have considered." ~Danica McKellar The upper elementary grades are all about solidifying basic skills, especially in math. My hard-working fifth graders are working to gain math proficiency.

I teach fifth grade in a low-income, high-needs school in NYC.

Many of my students have parents that work late into the evening, which leaves them without anyone to assist in homework or studying. Many of our students come from homes where English is the second language, which also makes it difficult to assist with homework. Even with these disadvantages, my students come to school everyday with a smile on their face, ready to learn! We keep our expectations high to motivate and encourage our students to do their best. Even with high standards and positive attitudes, I have many students that are lacking in the fundamental math skills.

My Project

In order to prepare my students for middle school and beyond, I create a variety of center activities to help reinforce new skills and practice old skills. Center activities are small group activities that are created based on the needs of the students. I would like to be able to create a center activity based on technology. At this time, we only have two desktop computers. This is hardly enough technology to share between 30 fifth graders! By adding new iPads to the classroom, I can have more students engaged in meaningful math activities. Let's face it, these days students are motivated by technology! Even the lowest-performing students can have success when they are motivated by something they love! Between the Internet and today's apps, there are a multitude of resources out there to help our students be successful in a more fun and interesting way than completing worksheets. But, the students need access to these resources.

By donating to this project, you will help students access an unlimited amount of resources.

Resources that will not only help them attain the basic math proficiency needed for higher level thinking, but open them to new mathematical challenges! Help my students become tomorrow's great mathematical minds by donating to this project today!
