Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fourth grade students enjoy hearing narratives from the past. They are excited about their units on historical fiction and California history. So far, they've enjoyed learning about the European explorers, the missions, and their effect on Native Americans. Their excitement continues as they begin learning about the Gold Rush, World War II, and other big topics in history.

In their history research, they are discovering the need to consider diverse perspectives to construct an in-depth representation of the past.

My students are also making connections to the historical monuments in their neighborhood. They are noticing street names (e.g. Junipero Serra Boulevard, El Camino Real, Mission Street); the dependence on the ocean; and the missions. This shows them that history continues to have relevance today.

My Project

My fourth graders are continuing their journey as historians by traveling to the past with the help of their literary characters. These young historians are very diverse. They are at different points in their reading life. Their particular interests in history are also diverse. Some are more enthusiastic to learn about the Gold Rush. Others are more keen on learning about World War II. Other students would like to analyze history through the eyes of African-Americans.

Because of the diverse needs and interests of my students, a variety of books on historical fiction ---including different time periods and perspectives ---will optimize my students' literary growth.

To encourage a deeper understanding of history, they need different sources and perspectives to study. The historical fiction books I am requesting cover some of their high interests: the early United States, World War II, and young African-Americans' role in desegregation. The post-its will allow my students to reflect on their reading. They will also have conversations about their readings in their book clubs.
