My Project

Last year we introduced "Project Play" to students in an effort to encourage more student directed learning. It was wildly successful. During this time my second graders created countless buildings, planes, robots, and magical worlds by building with LEGO bricks. Several years ago I received a generous donation of a large enough quantity of LEGO bricks that most of the class could choose to build individually or in small groups during the same Project Play period. They documented their creations and wrote both fiction and nonfiction writing in relation to their work. This year I am excited to be teaching the same group of kids as 3rd graders. They are ready for more advanced challenges. Forces and motion are a part of the Next Generation Science standards for 3rd grade and LEGO BricQ kits are a perfect vehicle for exploring these concepts. They need more than just standard bricks, however. The kits I am hoping to get provide new materials and also curriculum I can use to help guide their explorations. I will continue to encourage them to document this learning in multiple forms. I believe this will be motivating on multiple levels.
