Young Chemists Need Working Computers for Their Data

My students need working computers. I have 26 old laptops whose hard drives are worn out. My students and I will replace the 26 hard drives with these 26 SSD (solid state drives).

My Students

I am grateful to be working at a high-needs school in my own neighborhood. I adore working at WAHS.

In total I have 172 students this school year.

The majority (121 students) are my chemists or honors chemists. Chemistry is a required course for all of our students, therefore the range of their needs is wide: while for most their biggest struggle is coming to school regularly, others struggle with not having enough of a challenge. I also have an advisory class of 37 freshman. And lastly I am our school's Academic Decathlon teacher with 14 decathletes in that course.

I was inspired to start applying for grant money this year because while my number of pupils per class has increased the last two years.. the number of old laptops that I am able to keep running has dwindled dismally.

According to my student survey, 78 % of my students here have access neither to WiFi nor a computer at home. Most of my students do use their phone to access the school's WiFi, but 11 % do not have a phone. Our school is designated as a "high poverty" school site.

My Project

Each year I get students excited about using spreadsheets and coding their own simulators in my chemistry courses. But this year our aged laptops are failing to even boot up. We spent many hours this month installing a smaller operating system (replaced Windows with Linux) but all of the laptops except one are still slow and unreliable.

We revived the one laptop by replacing its worn out hard drive with a 120 GB Kingston SSD.

Now we want to do the same for the remaining 26 machines. My students not only will get working computers, but some hands-on experience in keeping some older technology in use and out of our landfill.
