My Students

Young Adult Lit is molding life-long readers. My students choose Young Adult novels to fit their class project. Once they start reading, they want to read even more! My classroom library needs a larger variety of books to satisfy my diverse group of readers. Many students can't afford to buy their own books.

Students choose Young Adult Lit because they love to read or they want to love reading.

They walk in the room excited because they have some choice in what they read. This excitement has lead to peer recommendation in and outside of my class. I read Young Adult novels also because it allows me to build my rapport with them. All of the novels I purchase help build my class library. This often costs me hundreds of dollars each year, but I do it anyway because my students come from an increasingly poor public school district. General Motors played a huge role in our area, and the lay-offs have been hitting the families hard. Our high school had to cut our budget, so trying to order more books has been close to impossible. This leaves my students at a loss when all they want to do is succeed in my class and read until their hearts are content. This class is creating a community of readers within our high school that needs extra help to truly thrive.

My Project

As a class we read three contemporary Young Adult novels. The trimester project revolves around reading additional Young Adult novels, but the students must also research their novels, create a visual, and write book reviews for each of the books they read. The projects vary from making book trailers, reading books based on themes, beginning their own YA novel, etc. The trimester is 12 weeks long and in those 12 weeks my students are reading at least six novels. The sense of pride they feel once they accomplish this is overwhelming. Some of my students are lucky to read that many books in a year! This class is teaching my students that reading is fun and should continue throughout their lives. I'm requesting more YA books that will provide my students a larger variety to choose from and share with one another. Some titles my students requested are Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia, Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick, Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers, and Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld.

Donating to this project will add to the ripple effect that is already beginning in my Young Adult Lit class.

My students are talking to one another about the books they've read, but more importantly they are talking to their friends outside my class. Students I don't have are approaching me and asking to borrow the book that one of my students just told them about. My students are telling other teachers to read these novels! Donations will foster more life-long readers.
