My Students

Mrs. L, how do I find information on Charles Howard? Mrs. L, what is a xochiyaoyotl? These are questions I hear daily as I attempt to teach my students how to use the features of a book. They have failed to grasp how to use a table of contents, index, or glossary to get information for reports.

In a given year, I teach anywhere from 30 to 90 9th grade students who read at or below the 6th grade level.

Within my school of 800 9th graders, typically one-third or more of the students do not read on grade-level. These are students likely to drop out of high school and will rarely go on to get their GED and/or continue on to get any form of post-secondary education. These students lack the ability to use their textbooks to their advantage. They do not understand how to locate information in a book using the table of contents or an index; they do not realize that many books have a glossary to help them understand the big words; they do not grasp the concept that the pictures and captions are included to help them understand new ideas and visualize the text. In a nation where the type of job one gets is based on one's highest level of education, we need to give these young men and women the best advantages possible. The best way to do that is to build on their reading skills.

My Project

The You Wouldn't Want To... series is comprised of over 50 titles covering the gory, exciting, dangerous, and yucky details from history. Each book consists of 13 chapters, including an introduction, a table of contents, an index, and a glossary. Each chapter is two pages long and full of facts, pictures, captions, maps, and other text features students will encounter in the textbooks they read every day. With the 31 titles I am requesting, I can provide each student with a different topic but teach them the same strategies at the same exact time. No more attempting to keep everyone on the same page in books set up differently.

Have I mentioned yet that this series will provide the perfect opportunity for me to teach them how to write a research paper?

The learning opportunities with this series are endless--learning about prefixes and suffixes, learning how to take notes, learning to organize ideas into a paper. Ultimately, these books will enable me to teach skills that will give these students the chance to succeed and make it to college and beyond.
