Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am teaching Biology and Environmental Science. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.

My students need monocular telescopes, animal and plant field guides, and clipboards for surveys, and citizen science.

My students are learning about the threatened and protected Western Snowy Plover bird. Snowy Plovers have many breeding sites on the California coastline. Protecting the Snowy Plover is crucial because they act as an indicator species for the health of coastal ecosystems, are vulnerable to human disturbances on the beach, and their declining population reflects the negative impacts on their sandy shoreline habitat.

Students are always asked, what can they do to help the environment? The answer is they can help by being a citizen scientist.

My students learn through experiential learning that is grounded in real world, local, phenomena that is immediately tangible to them, like the threatened Snowy Plover. At our local beach, my students will take on the role of field biologists during our kelp wrack survey to study the diet and food web of shorebirds. We will visit a nesting site and use eBird and iNaturalist to participate in citizen science as we observe the birds with the monocular telescopes, take photos, reference our field guides to make positive identifications of all our sightings, just like scientists would. The students will see a variety of bird species they will need to identify. eBird is a public database that provides scientists with real-time data on bird distribution and abundance which can then be used to increase outreach, write proposals, and facilitate decision-making.

This hands-on activity will connect my students with other citizen scientists in their community and their uploaded sightings will make a direct impact on the Snowy Plover population. Scientists around the world will see their data.
