This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The RKBBH Community Food Share is a school garden program in which produce is distributed throughout our school community. There are approximately 40 students ranging in age from 2nd-5th grade involved in the creation of our garden. Some students plant and maintain the garden with their teachers before, during, and after school. Some students cook for themselves and their peers in our Before School Gardening Club, and finally, many 3-5 graders cut, bag, and distributed herbs throughout the school, the office, the PTA, and the community. These share bags are accompanied by our classroom-tested recipes to encourage cooking with fresh, organic ingredients.

Unfortunately, our garden program has been invaded by pests that have made growing our vegetables difficult, and at times impossible.

Produce has consistently been leveled and consumed by animals that we have been unable to trap, or remove. Our solution? Hydroponics! These units will allow us to continue our program by relocating part of our garden indoors. These self-contained hydroponic units, grow lights, and liquid nutrients provide all the requisite materials. I believe that these units will ex-seed our expectations, allowing us to share even more produce next year!
