My Project

Welcome to Chicago. We are the city of neighborhoods. My school is nestled on a tree lined street. You may see a group of students with strong character words on their backs, Compassion, Critical thinker, Integrity, Explorer, and Active Citizen. These traits are at the root of everything we do at Polaris Charter Academy.

My students may be wondering where their next meal will come from, but for the next 8 hours, they will be passionately learning all that they can so that they have their pick of the best high schools the city has to offer.

My goals as a middle school math teacher is to remove all the barriers.

As the bell rings, students walk with younger siblings, with grandparents and moms and dads.

I am a teacher in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the city of Chicago. My students are neighborhood kids. My students are passionate, Sox and Cubs fans. My boys are passionate about basketball and my girls love all things dancing and video gaming. I have a pretty typical middle-grade Math teacher, amidst the violence and poverty they see outside their windows, our classroom is a safe haven.

Since the global pandemic, I have wondered, have I changed, have kids changed, and I realize that school has changed. Since experiencing the pandemic, I need to approach teaching and learning differently. My students are asking for more engaging ways to show their mathematical thinking. The stand up whiteboards will meet my students where they are and give them the passion and engagement they need to fall in love with math.

My students who are neurotypical and neurodivergent need access to visuals and whiteboard spaces to be able to share their mathematical thinking with others.
