Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 26 eager and excited fourth graders. They all come to school ready to learn, no matter the challenges they face at home. They are a diverse group of students from low-income backgrounds who speak multiple languages, play sports, have different interests and talents, and are excited to gain new knowledge each day.

They are passionate about making a difference in the world through many channels.

My students see how current issues in the world are impacting them, their families, and communities, and they are ready to take charge in having their voices heard. Although they are 9 and 10 years old, they are ready to create change and be social activists.

My Project

Although I teach fourth grade, I have a wide range of reading abilities in my classroom. The range includes students reading at a kindergarten level all the way to a sixth grade reading level. As a fourth grade teacher, I do not have enough resources at a kindergarten, first, or second grade reading level to meet my students where they are at and to help them reach that fourth grade reading level.

I need materials that will help accelerate student reading abilities so those who are behind can get to a fourth grade reading level.

My students who are working at these levels are currently are learning short vowels, long vowels, digraphs, and blend sounds. The decodable books would be used by students to practice decodable the new sounds they are learning with me. Having books that students can use to practice these phonics skills is crucial in helping them learn these sounds and internalize them.Students would take these books home nightly to practice decoding and reading with their families too. The tiles would provide students an opportunity to build words while they are sounding them out in an engaging way. This would be use as a scaffold to writing while introducing new sounds to students.
