This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a high needs public NYC high school focused on preparing students in hospitality and tourism careers.

Our small school is comprised of around 300 students who are now learning fully in person, with masks and social distancing in place.

Many of these students come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced-price lunch. We have a large population of students who are classified as special education and/or ESL and work hard to support their needs.

Students often come into our school not having all the skills they need to be successful in high school. These students are supported through after school and Saturday tutoring and through the work of their very dedicated teachers and staff.

My Project

Remote learning was tough but now that we're back in the classroom fully in person, we are finding different hurtles to overcome. In particular, we are struggling with being able to hear each other while wearing masks and having air purifiers, fans, and windows all making lots of background noise.

This project requests the use of 5 Qball throwable microphones for students to share ideas, ask questions, and communicate without having to shout through their masks.

The way it works is kids throw it to each other and speak into the microphone when they want to share an idea! There's a connected speaker that also works with the technology in the classroom so all voices are heard. Especially after a very difficult school year in 2020, we are adamant that all voices are important and we want to hear everyone (and do so safely)!

This project will be a pilot program for our school to utilize these innovative microphones (originally featured on Shark Tank) with the 10th grade students. If the results of this program are as good as we expect, then we will look to secure more funding for even more students in the school to utilize these balls.
