My Students

My kindergarten students are at the perfect age to introduce the concept of money.

They love anything and everything that has to do with money.

When they get to buy snacks from the big kids' store, they pull out change and wonder if they have enough. They can't wait to tell me or their classmates that the tooth fairy left them money. They also love to tell their friends how much money they got for their birthday- even if what they say they got doesn't match up with what they actually have.

I need to get my students' money savvy so that when they pull out a small amount of change they'll know exactly how much they have.

My Project

My kindergarteners are going to have a ball learning where the money comes from and why it's important to know how to manage your money.

We are going to have three pop-up shops in our classroom: a sunglass store, a cell phone store and a pet store.

Each store will have a cashier, a bagger and an individual who restocks the shelves. The stores will open after the students are introduced to money denominations, how people earn their money, why it is important to save, spend, donate and invest your money- even when you're small, and why it is important to know the difference between needs and wants.

The books will be used to introduce different themes. The sunglasses will be used to fill our store shelves. We will also have fun with our money toss game, a domino coin game, designing our own money, washing some dirty pennies, having a coin rubbing station as well as having a coin sorting station.
