Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Imagine an urban school near abandoned train tracks and an unpleasant refuse plant across the street. Our school is located in a high-poverty neighborhood where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of our school. Despite the many problems they face, I am looking to keep my students motivated by providing them a safe and inviting environment to learn.
My students deserve equitable, individualized, and meaningful learning experiences that lead to readiness for college, careers, and civic life.
My Project
As a school, we define equity in curriculum to be "culturally relevant, responsive to student feedback, their lived experiences, and reflective of diverse communities, cultures, histories and contributions. This includes attention to African-American, Latinx, Asian, indigenous, women, LGBTQIA+, disabled, religious minorities (including Muslims), working language class people and youth."
With these books, I can highlight the struggles and celebrations of the Black, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities and incorporate them into my curriculum.
Students will be able to see themselves in what we read. In education, we often talk about the window vs mirror effect. A mirror reflects your own culture and helps you build your identity. A window is a resource that offers you a view into someone else's experience. In order to be citizens of the world, it is vital to understand that students need to learn about themselves as well as about others who are different from them.
