My Students

My students are writers, poets, and artists, but don't have the technology resources necessary to share their work and learn from each other.

The first graders in my class are hardworking and hungry to learn.

Despite their persistence, they face substantial obstacles: 94% of the students at our school receive free or reduced price lunch and the majority of the students in my class are English Language Learners who speak Spanish at home. In my dual immersion class, all students are working on learning or improving their Spanish language comprehension, so visual supports are key to understanding. Without any way to share class work or assignments with all the students, however, many will not be able to see and therefore miss out on the lesson. Being able to show exactly how to perform a new task, or better yet, having a student demonstrate it, is far more powerful for a learner than just being told.

My Project

A document camera is a boring name for a fantastic device: by hooking it up to an LCD projector, students will be able to project a large image of their work so that all their peers can see and learn from it. When I teach a new strategy, I can demonstrate for the whole group how to employ it, from revising a piece of writing to creating a diagram to solve a math problem. Students will easily transfer a skill to their own work because they've gotten to see exactly how it's done: no telling necessary. I've seen document cameras in action in classrooms, and their impact across the curriculum is impressive. In reading, picture books can be shared so that all students can notice and make inferences from the illustrations. In math, different methods of solving the same problem can be quickly compared. In writing, the teacher can demonstrate a new technique and then show student examples of that skill the very same day.

This little camera quickly becomes integrated into the life of the class because it allows the group to achieve something that both teachers and students crave; the ability to easily, almost effortlessly, share the products of student learning so all can see, understand and build on what's been done.

This device will drive students to create and show their very best.
