My Project

In agreement with the Science of Reading research, there are five main components that are fundamental to reading success: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Children generally love stories. They are enthralled by them. When they hear a story, they instinctively want to read the book themselves or hear it again. My first grade students are no different!

Many of my first grade students however have encountered academic setbacks in their short school careers that has been deterring them from immersing themselves in a book independently.

The pandemic has unfortunately created many gaps that if not filled will result in additional reading difficulties and possible negative outcomes for life. My students are struggling academically-especially in reading and writing. 70% of the scholars in my class are reading at least 2 grade levels below expectations. Despite this fact, the children really want to do well and enjoy reading and writing time in class. They seek out the supports to be able to complete work tasks on their own, but it is a struggle to give them what they need due to severe budget cuts and lack of resources.

With a decodable library, my students will have access to the materials they need to practice and improve their reading skills. Decodable books allow students to practice reading skills independently. Students gain confidence as readers which makes them want to read even more, the more practice students get at reading, the better they become.

In addition, some students do not have access to many books in their homes. Many of their parents want to help their children become better readers, but they do not have access to books that their children can read independently.

You can help my students become lifelong learners and readers! Please consider supporting our classroom!
