Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our class are a diverse group. They come from hard working families; however many are below the standard reading level for their grade based on New York State Standards. This is in part due to disabilities; in addition many come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Half of my 3rd grade students are reading between a Kindergarten and 2nd grade level, and my fear is that if I am not able to support their needs this year, they will only fall further behind.

Unfortunately not only is their reading lagging behind their peers, but their knowledge of the world around them.

We provide field trips for real-life learning, but the ability to build prior knowledge before the trips as well as to teach students how they can learn through books is so significant. I want my students to have all the opportunities I grew up with.

Many of my students receive free lunch and are from single parent homes, and most come to school with no supplies and struggle every day.

My Project

In order to improve student reading skills, I need to provide them with a proven multisensory, structured language program. My students need FUNdations student materials for a structured phonics and spelling curriculum using engaging, multi-sensory techniques. I have implemented and witnessed the amazing results from using this FUNdations program and I know if I can get the right materials I can provide strategies essential for reading, spelling, and handwriting.

I want to make sure learning to read is fun and approachable for my students while laying the groundwork for life-long literacy.

My students already realize they are reading below grade-level and providing them with fun yet effective strategies is critical. Your donation will have an immediate impact on my classroom.
