Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in the process of planning sculptures that explore foods that are personally significant to them. They have the option to develop a soft sculpture of their food using felt and embroidery thread, or an oven-bake sculpture using sculpey, acrylic paint and glaze. They will also be asked to incorporate found objects in some aspect of their sculpture. While we already have some of the materials in our classroom available for this project, we are in need of more sculpey, glaze, glaze brushes, sculpting tools, felt, cleaning wipes, and armature wire.

As we develop these sculptures, we are learning about different contemporary artists that use food in their work to think about identity and culture, and the connections between food and big ideas such as labor, migration, and the land.

Students will ultimately dedicate their sculptures to someone or something they would like to honor, such as a family member, a lost loved one, a place, farmworkers, community activists etc. Once students have completed their sculptures and written artist statements and dedications, their finished pieces will be brought together into a collective altar that we will exhibit for the school community.
