A chair flies through the air, narrowly missing my assistants head. I reposition myself closer to the student in Crisis and repeat calmly "I need you to be safe." This too often is a scene from my classroom.

My classroom has 10 students and 3 adults.
Many of them come from a low socio-economic status. My students are student with significant behavior challenges, often due to the inability to regulate their emotional and physical states. These students range in age from 7-12.
My Project
My students are learning several strategies that help them to identify and regulate emotional or physical states. Yoga is one of the strategies that we are using with students. We have 4 yoga mats but not enough for each student. At the beginning of each day we set aside 15 to 20 minutest to do child centered yoga, to help the kids get in touch with both their body and their emotional state. My hope is that the students will use this new awareness to help them cope with overpowering sensory and emotional issues.
Most of my students will have yoga mats to properly perform the yoga being taught in class.
I envision my students walking away from my classroom not only have grown in academic knowledge, but also knowledge of self.
