Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have been working at Miami Senior High School for over ten years. Our school is a Title I school and is 99% Hispanic. I have many students who have just arrived in this country and do not even know the language, which can be difficult at times. This is on top of the regular everyday stressors of high school. By incorporating yoga and stretching into my personal fitness class this will provide some calming and relaxation into their daily lives.

Some of my goals for this project are to improve focus and concentration this can be assisted with regular stretching and yoga, providing the mind-body connection.

Participating in yoga and stretching can enhance mental clarity and focus which is beneficial for high school students. As someone who practices yoga and meditation, I am excited to do these activities with students and show them all the benefits practicing yoga can bring such as mindfulness and self-discipline.

The students that I teach are very special all in their own way. Each and every one of them provides an insight into their culture and where they are from and this space will give us an area to come together, share, and at the same time provide us with an emotional connection through our stretching and practice. Each year comes with a new challenge and new students in this area will also bring new knowledge to them as well. They are always asking about my balance chair by having these available they will also get to experience it and use it for their practice as well, serving a dual purpose. I can not wait to embark on this journey with them.
