My Students

My all time favorite quote, " All children can learn." I know it is simple, but I truly believe that as a special educator it is my responsibility to help every student reach their very own potential, and to celebrate along the way.

My students come from a variety of places.

Last year, I had foster children, children from single parent homes, and children whose parents gave birth to them when they were only teenagers themselves. Some have a parent that is in jail, others have parents who are in gangs. Many students come from families where homework and school is secondary to having food to eat or money to pay the rent. Some of my students live in the projects and are on welfare. I need them to know that I care and am doing everything I can to help them grow into healthy and literate citizens of tomorrow. All year long we talk about the importance of education and how having a good education can make all the difference. The FAR reading assessment (I'm piloting the program) will help me identify strengths and weaknesses in my students reading abilities. Once I am able to identify their individual strengths and weaknesses, I will be able to target each and every student's individual needs.

My Project

A document camera would allow me to project any image to the entire class. The document camera would be used every day during our journal writing, daily edit, and grammar lessons. Students would be able to display their work to the entire class and the lessons would be much more engaging and interactive for them. A document camera would allow me to model reading and writing strategies to the class directly from the text, novel, or document that we are working with. I attended a workshop on the benefits of implementing yoga to special needs students. The workshop was fantastic, and I continued doing more research on the benefits of yoga. All of the teachers in my building were trained to implement a 20 minute yoga session every morning. It is unrealistic to expect my students to supply yoga mats, and I believe that the mats will make the yoga more effective. At the moment without the mats we perform "chair yoga." Having the mats would allow for a greater experience.

I am excited to start the school year and implement yoga on a daily basis.

As mentioned earlier, students sometimes arrive to school with a lot of baggage that most couldn't even imagine. The thought of allowing students to quiet their minds by starting the day with some peaceful music and stretches, and then going right into our reading/ writing is a beautiful vision. Having a document camera will help me better engage all of my students. I look forward to endless possibilities.
