Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being an adolescent and leaving your family and country to make the journey to the US because your life has been threatened and you are fleeing violence. Making the dangerous journey alone, you experience violence and often sexual assault. Then you are detained as an unaccompanied minor and begin the legal process to obtain political asylum status. You didn't have much schooling after 6th grade because your family couldn't afford it or you had interrupted schooling throughout your life. Now, you must struggle to survive in a foreign language and school. This is the reality of the resilient students that I had the privilege of teaching last year and this year.

My students risked their lives for the "American Dream" and I want to provide them with all the opportunities possible to become their best self and achieve their dreams here.

They want to be successful students and be able to contribute to their families and communities. And while our country is polarized around immigration, I think we can agree that all young people deserve a safe community to grow up in and an education that allows them to develop their abilities and reach their potential.

My Project

In addition to the stressfulness of being adolescents, my students have many uncertainties relating to their living situations, concern for incomes, and previous trauma that they are dealing with. Therefore it is no surprise that they struggle to feel grounded and focused, which impacts their behavior and their ability and readiness to learn.

One way to help students cope is through the practice of mindfulness and yoga.

We have started mindfulness practices, but we would really like mats to be able to take the practice further and to incorporate yoga routines. Students are already excited about the possibility that we might have mats soon!
