Yoga Mats Needed for Peace in Kindergarten!

My Students

Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC; where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, 6 of my 15 kindergarten students have Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) addressing their various needs (ie., developmental delays, speech and language impairments, autism, and/or behavior challenges).

Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges and would benefit tremendously from having yoga in the kindergarten classroom.

It should be noted, however, that all of my students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and they have shown so much growth and potential for excellence since their very first day of school back in August, which seems so long ago!

My Project

My students are literally "off to the races" from the time they arrive in the classroom for breakfast at 8:15am until they eat lunch at 11:15am. In between, we have had instruction in writing, literacy centers, and a reading intervention. In between instruction, I have settled many squabbles involving "I want my mommy!", lack of sleep, sharing, "I'm hungry!" or imagined slights that didn't actually occur. That being the case, after our lunch, its time for "Den Zen Yoga!" This calms my students down from a very busy, stressful morning; and prepares us for the remainder of the afternoon.

Research has shown "that yoga at an early age encourages good self-esteem; fosters cooperation and compassion; and physically, it enhances flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness In addition, it helps children deal with stress and other issues outside the classroom - preparing them for life."

With daily yoga practice, my students can learn another strategy in our arsenal to help them stay calm during challenging situations. Please help me support my students by providing them with yoga mats, which will help them stay inspired to participate in our daily yoga retreat! Also, having their own individual yoga mats will clearly define their spaces; and keep them off the floor!
