Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a fourth grade class at a Title 1 school in the South Bronx section of New York City. Our school has been identified as a School In Need of Improvement (SINI) because it is a low-performance school. My students live in an impoverished neighborhood. Many live in homeless shelters or overcrowded apartments. They rely on eating healthy meals (breakfast, lunch, and snack) at school. Once students leave school their diets are high in fat, sodium, and sugar. Many students are overweight as a result of their diet and lack of exercise. Therefore, I am promoting healthy eating and daily exercise which includes and array of floor activities. My students do not get a Physical Education (gym) period. However, I am mandated to teach them this subject. I am forced to perform exercise routines in my small, overcrowded classroom. This is problematic because floor routines are unsanitary for students. Our floors are dusty, dirty, and mice droppings are visible. Students' clothes are filthy after performing floor exercises. Unfortunately,students are discouraged from participating in activities even though they love to exercise. Basically, they do not want to get dirty. I believe yoga mats, or similar, will solve this problem. If all 22 students had a yoga mat they would not have to worry about getting dirty while getting physically fit. Join me in promoting healthy lifestyles! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
