Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each morning we begin by orienting our day. Students have a "tool book" which they use to maintain a calendar, a weekly planner, and to track their daily performance across subject areas. By the end of the year my students will be better able to express their interests/opinions in writing/verbally.

I serve 3rd-5th grade students with special needs in an elementary school setting.

My students have a wide range of physical and/or cognitive impairments. My school is a school with many successful educational initiatives across the organization. Our organization has a long standing reputation as being child-centered and oriented toward high standards and expectations.

My Project

My students will use the Yoga mats each Wednesday in Yoga class. Students will enter a quiet and soothing classroom environment with the new Yoga mats neatly spaced about the room. They will enjoy their own personal meditative space on their new Yoga mats each week as they learn relaxation and self-regulatory techniques. My students will also enjoy using their new graphing flip charts several times each week during math class. Students will work in groups to chart, analyze and present data on their reusable graphing charts.

My students need support in developing positive coping mechanisms that help them self-regulate stressful experiences.

This need goes beyond the classroom and into their daily lives. Yoga has given my students a much need relaxation strategy. My classroom is a quieter and more relaxing environment thanks to Yoga class and my students report doing Yoga on their own at home on the weekends.
